The Zamfara State chapter of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) commemorated World Veterinary Day 2025 with a public lecture held at the Nigeria Army Officers Mess and Suites in Gusau. The event, themed “Animal Health Takes a Team,” brought together key stakeholders to discuss collaborative approaches to animal health and welfare.
Dr. Mukhtar Salihu Anka, Chairman of NVMA Zamfara, opened the event by emphasizing the importance of teamwork in advancing veterinary services and safeguarding public health and calling on members to sit up and maintain the integrity of the profession
Representing the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Habibu Yalwa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, served as the chief host. In his address, he called for increased public awareness on animal health issues, highlighting the critical role of veterinarians in ensuring food security and controlling zoonotic diseases.and renewed the state government commitment in safeguarding public heath through sensitization and creating public awareness
The Emir of Anka, Alhaji Attahiru Muhammad Ahmad, who served as the father of the day, underscored the need for concerted efforts to protect animal rights and welfare. He advocated for stronger policies and community engagement to promote ethical treatment of animals.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Nafiu Lawal from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He elaborated on the theme, stressing the interconnectedness of animal health, human health, and the environment, and the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach to address emerging health challenges.
The event highlighted the vital contributions of veterinary professionals to public health and the economy, aligning with national efforts to enhance the livestock sector and ensure sustainable development.
