Few weeks to the end of first term of 2023/24 academic year, some parents in Zamfara state have failed to register their children in junior secondary schools across the state due to economic hardship.
Investigation conducted by the invisible INSIDER revealed that though their children successfully gained admission into JSS to advance their education, the children could not be registered due to parents’ inability to incur the financial requirements related to the registration.
Speaking to the Invisible INSIDER on the issue, the Principal of GGDSS Samaru, Gusau, Hajiya Kulu Shehu Umar confirmed that only one of the four JSS 1 classes in the school has so far been filled with registered students. She wondered why despite the recent reduction of registration and PTA fees in public schools by the state government parents were reluctant to register their children in time.
Also speaking on the issue, a civil servant, Malan Suleman Abubakar said he has two female children to register in the JSS but could not do so due to the economic hardship his family encounters. He added that he will require fifteen thousand Naira (N15,000.00) to cater for their educational needs before the registration. “With the current situation of abject poverty, how can I spend such amount of money on them and abandon other essential basic needs, he queried.
Malan Suleman tressed that to register one female child in a day school, he must expend the sum of seven thousand, five hundred Naira for her school uniform, notebooks, sandals and registration fees.
