The Congress of University Academics (CONUA), University of Maiduguri Branch, and the Borno State Council of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have agreed to enter into a strategic partnership to promote workers’ rights, capacity building, training, and the empowerment of labour members in Borno
State.

Receiving the State leadership of the TUC led by its Chairman, Comrade Baba Mohammed, the Interim Chairman of the CONUA, University of Maiduguri Branch, Prof. Shettima Muhammed Fannami, revealed that the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) was conceived and birthed by academics across Nigerian universities to reverse the decline in the public confidence in university education in Nigeria.
Prof. Shettima Muhammed Fannami, who described the solidarity visit of the TUC leadership as a morale booster to the CONUA members of the branch, stressed that the CONUA, as a new labour union on campus, is an assemblage of visionary and courageous academics to pursue improved policies for dignified labour and conditions of service for the university academics.
The Interim Chairman of the CONUA assured the TUC leadership that CONUA is here at the University of Maiduguri to deepen the democratic ethos on campus, stressing that the door of CONUA of UNIMAID will remain open for all constructive engagement and partnership with the State TUC in the areas of welfare, capacity building, training, and workshops for their members.
In his speech, the State Chairman of the TUC, Comrade Baba Mohammed, expressed delight that the coming of the CONUA will expand and democratize the labour space at the University of Maiduguri.
Comrade Baba Mohammed reminded the CONUA that there are challenges ahead as the new union on campus, stressing that history will be kind to you if you remain steadfast in breaking the resistance of the established elite comrades.
He who assured the readiness of the State Council of the TUC to leverage the vision and quality ideas of the CONUA members to move the TUC forward in Borno State, said the TUC will engage the expertise of CONUA to come up with a plan to collectively build and advocate for improved policies for dignified labour and conditions of service in the State.
