The Zamfara State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, has urged clinicians to be vigilant for anthrax and other outbreaks, emphasizing early detection as key to mitigating their impact.
Addressing a sensitization workshop for health care professionals, the Commissioner at Command Gust inn thanked them for their tireless efforts and acknowledged the challenges they face.
“The recent cases of anthrax outbreak serve as a stark reminder of how quickly diseases can spread,” the Commissioner said.
“We must be aware and prepared to recognize the signs and symptoms of diseases with outbreak potential.”
She also assured clinicians that the government is committed to supporting their work and improving their working conditions.
“Your well-being is integral to the success of our health systems,” Dr. Maradun said.
In his comments, the State Coordinator for the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Raji, encouraged the participants to ensure that as they go back to their various hospital cascades, the information shared with them is disseminated to other colleagues to improve the sensitivity of the surveillance network, which is key in the response.
The Head of Public Health Emergency Operations Center (PHEOC) Dr. Ahmad Muhammad Gusau welcomed the Medical Directors of secondary health facilities to the sensitization meeting on the current Anthrax outbreak.
He encouraged them to cooperate with the Commissioner in order to achieve the desired goal of the declared state of emergency on health.
Dr. Gusau updated the Medical Directors on the progress made by the DR. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun led Ministry in collaboration with Environment and Animal health ministries in the concept of One health approach in breaking the chain of transmission of Anthrax among the animals and preventing its spread to the human population in the state and neighborhood.
He appreciated the giant effort made by the State Government in commencing Animal vaccination proactively even before the confirmation of the case in the State due to the outbreak in our neighbouring State of Niger last year. He also stated that part of the measures taken asides animals vaccination include continuous surveillance on the human to ensure early detection and reporting any suspicious sign/symptoms among the human populations.
Dr. Gusau also commended the effort of the Director Public Health, Dr. Yusuf Abubakar (Haske) for his leadership in coordinating the response and ensuring all the response interventions are according to international standards acceptable in our environment here in the State.
