From Abdullahi Adamu Gusau
Gov Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state has approved the conversion of the structures of the proposed Girls Science Academy, Sokoto for the use of the Shehu Shagari University of Education.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) in March 2022 recognized the upgrade of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto to University of Education, Sokoto, making it the 58th State university and 206th university in Nigeria.
However, the new university has no structure of its own, thus the take over of the Girls Academy in order to meet the requirements of the NUC and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).
Both Commissions also forbid that two tertiary institutions ne located on the same ground.
Consequently, Gov Tambuwal told newsmen that he visited the Girls Academy on Friday “to see whether we can actually use this academy for the take-off of the Shehu Shagari University of Education, in view of the fact that both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the NCCE rules and regulations, two tertiary institutions cannot coexist in one environment.”
“The Shehu Shagari College of Education and the Shehu Shagari University of Education are not supposed to coexist where presently the Shehu Shagari College of Education is. And, we know that Shehu Shagari College of Education is having a population of not less than 8,000 students.
“We don’t have anywhere where we can move them to than hand over that institution to the Shehu Shagari College of Education. So, we are compelled by this very compelling reason to be here to see whether we can use this as a takeoff for the University of Education. Personally, I am satisfied with the level of work.
“We’re going to have a team from the NUC coming to inspect this place. I am hopeful that when they come to see for themselves the structures that are here, they will be convinced that the University of Education can takeoff in collaboration with Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) admission session will commence at this session, God willing.
“That’s why we are here,” the Governor said.
