It is with a heavy heart that I, Mati Ali, former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jigawa State Council (1999–2003), and NUJ National Trustee (2003–2007), extend my deepest condolences on the passing of our esteemed union elder and pioneer National Secretary of the NUJ, Pa Jola Ogunlusi.
He passed away in the early hours of Saturday, April 19, 2025, at the age of 91, following a brief illness.
Born on September 25, 1934, in Esun-Ekiti, Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Comrade Jola Ogunlusi received his early education in the area.
Late Comrade Ogunlusi began his union service as Assistant Secretary of the Lagos State Council of the NUJ following its reorganization in 1976. In 1977, he served—without pay—as the Protem Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
In 1978, he was appointed the first Executive National Secretary of the NUJ on a full-time basis, following the union’s transition into an industrial union. This appointment was a testament to his dedication and contributions to trade unionism, which dated back to 1963.
His leadership also extended to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), to which the NUJ is affiliated.
We honor his remarkable legacy, unwavering commitment, and pioneering spirit. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
