In a bid to strengthen and standardize local government administration, Zamfara state government is planning to conduct credible elections at the local government level.
Speaking to newsmen in an exclusive interview in his office, the Commissioner for local government, Engineer Ahmad Garba Yandi stated that local government Sole Administrators were appointed by the state government pending the election of democratically elected Chairmen and Councillors to lead the administrative councils of the local governments. He stressed that the state government was fully aware of the significant role the local government councils play in grassroots development of their communities through legitimate representation.
The Commissioner therefore disclosed that the state government under the leadership of Dr.
Dauda Lawal was committed to conduct credible local government council elections to standardize the democratic process of socio-economic and political development of the areas. He maintained that prior to the elections, the state government has embarked on the rehabilitation of the vital infrastructural facilities needed to provide conducive environment for effective administration of the councils.
Engineer Ahmad Garba said the local government secretariats were being rehabilitated to facilitate their operations. He declared that the ministry was closely monitoring and evaluating the performances of the local councils to ensure prudence of public resources and efficiency of their official duties.
The Commissioner assured that very soon, the previous status of non performance synonymous with the local government councils in the state will be positively changed. He added that concrete measures were being taken to systematically transform them into productive and result oriented government institutions.
